The National Rail Museum in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi showcases the rich heritage of Indian Railways across more than 11 acres. Inaugurated in 1977, it pairs an octagonal indoor building of six display galleries with a sprawling outdoor rail yard laid out like a working railway yard. Visitors can explore steam, diesel and electric locomotives, royal saloons, vintage coaches, the world famous Fairy Queen and the rare Patiala State Monorail, then ride the 1:8 scale toy train, hop on the joy train and try the coach, steam and diesel simulators. The Rails themed restaurant and a souvenir shop round out a full day out for families and rail enthusiasts.
