The National Museum in New Delhi is India's largest museum, located on Janpath in the heart of the capital. Established in 1949 and run by the Ministry of Culture, it holds over 200,000 works of art that span more than 5,000 years of Indian cultural heritage, from Harappan artefacts and Maurya and Gupta sculpture to Buddhist relics, bronzes, miniature paintings, manuscripts, arms and armour, jewellery, textiles and Central Asian antiquities. Its galleries carry visitors from prehistory to the modern era across two floors, making it one of the most comprehensive collections of Indian art and history in the world.
